Officer C. Lara-Nunez recognized the name of 32-year-old Anthony Burks on the Hackensack Municipal Court summonses found between the car seats, Capt. Peter Busciglio said.
Moments later, Lara-Nunez spotted Burks, who apologized and offered to return the two phone chargers, a power adapter and 10 sweatshirts bearing a company logo that he'd taken from the vehicle, the captain said.
He also turned over a tablet that he said he'd found on Hudson Street -- after first claiming it belonged to an uncle, Busciglio said.
Burks, who has a criminal history dating back 14 years, was arrested on charges of burglary and theft. He remained held Thursday in the Bergen County Jail.
Police, meanwhile, were looking for the tablet's owner.
